 Shedd Aquarium

The Shedd Aquarium is situated on the coast of Lake Michigan in downtown. This Chicago aquarium displays a collection of more than 2,100 species of fish, birds, snakes, reptiles and mammals etc. from around the globe. Shedd Aquarium opened in 1930, and now serves as home to more than 25,500 animals.

Explore Caribbean waters or watch the whales and dolphins play. Learn more from the saltwater and freshwater exhibits, along with the most popular Caribbean Coral Reef exhibit.  While you are there, check out the Oceanarium, that showcases marine mammals including Pacific white sided dolphins, sea otters and beluga whales. These whales are quite a draw for the tourists.

Get closer to the sharks at the Wild Reef- the latest addition to the permanent exhibits.  Get an up close look at the penguins' habitat and learn more about the iguanas and man-eating piranhas from the dangerous waters of Amazon.

The museum is surrounded by other popular attractions such as Chicago Museum Campus, Adler Planetarium and Field Museum of Natural History.

When you get hungry, the nearby Opera (312-461-0161), offers Chinese cuisine with a creative twist. You may want to try their Immortal squids and Peking duck. Later, order  some tantrum martinis at Tantrum, where the crowd is trendy and music live.

If you are looking for lodging, the Best Western Grant Park and Hotel Blake are the nicest hotels around the neighborhood.
