The Navy Pier has gone through a major face lift in the 1990s at a cost of $200 million. Lots of shops, fast food joints, a concert stage and a ballroom were added as part of the renovation.
Since 1916, Navy Pier has been a popular touristy spot and plays host to a bunch of special attractions.
Browse through the quirky shops, ride the majestic 150-foot-tall Ferris wheel, enjoy a 3-D movie at the IMAX theater, watch a classic play at the Shakespeare Theater, make new discoveries at the Chicago Children's Museum, stroll through the Smith Museum of Stained Glass Windows or just view dancing in the grand ballroom.
After you are done at the Pier, you may want to go to the nearby Lake Shore Park, where you can lighten up in the tranquil green spaces.
When you get hungry, go over to Riva (312-644-7482), and enjoy some succulent sea food entrees along with great views of the water front. On the lighter side, you may want to have some chicken salad sandwiches and salads at Fox & Obel Food Market Café (312-379-0112).
While you are in the neighborhood, you may want to stop by the Irish Lizzie McNeils, to have some beers and listen to the juke box. The place offers basic bar eats for its hungry clients. If you are the sporty kind, you may want to step into the ESPN Zone- a popular sports bar with an upbeat crowd.
If you are in an indulgent mood, stay at the chic and up-classy W Chicago Lakeshore, located just a short walk away from the Ontario Beach. If you are on a budget, look up the 2 star Best Western Grant Park. The hotel's 15th floor fitness center lends awesome waterfront views.
