Greektown is a small neighborhood placed along Halsted Street and just west of the Loop. It is made up of bars and restaurants situated between Van Buren and Madison Streets in the Near West Side. Every year the Greek community puts on one of Chicago's largest parades. The Annual Hellenic Heritage Parade draws a large crowd. You can see streets lined with people each March to see amazing floats; talented musicians and performers celebrate Greek-American culture.
The area reflects Greek symbols of identity such as restaurants topped with bright Greek flags, signs in Greek and English, and many Greek buildings in pure white. The Hellenic Museum and Cultural Center in Greektown plays an important role in the Greek-American culture and community.
There are not many attractions located in this area. Museum of Holography (312-226-1007), located at 1134 W Washington Blvd., is all about 3-D laser art. You can view artworks made by laser and learn more about this modern technique in art. Other places worth visiting is are Harpo Studios, home of The Oprah Winfrey Show and located on Carpenter and Washington, and Union Station, situated between Adams Street and Jackson Street, and one of the few Beaux-Art public spaces in the country.
When it comes to shopping, Greektown is known for specialized shops such as Athens Jewelry that sells fine and costume jewelry. Giorgio's Cigars only sells quality pipes, cigars and tobacco, and the Athenian Candle Company carries incense, candles, statuettes, books and various novelties.
The neighborhood is most popular for its Greek food. Santorinis (312-829-8820) has an upscale feeling, excellent food that is reasonably priced and are known for their seafood. In summer, it is fun to dine on the patio at Athena (312-655-0000). For fried squid and braised lamb that is fairly priced, Roditys (312-454-0800) is a superb choice. Touristy Greek Islands (312-782-9855), 200 S. Halsted St., offers a festive atmosphere and prompt service. Adventurous palates would delight in their broiled octopus. Nightlife options include Barrel Café, Spectrum, Byzantium, 9 muses, Artopolis and Dugan's Pub.
Amalfi Hotel Chicago and Hotel Blake are two popular hotels in the neighborhood.
